May - Speaking as Expertise |
 |
Speaking As Part of Selling Your Expertise.
Do you want to learn how to get more business or
leverage current business by adding speaking to
your portfolio of services? Recent market
research shows that "expertise" is the new
imperative in today's competitive market. So
what does that mean for a consultant? More and
more clients are seeking out and hiring
individuals who not only provide consulting
services, but also speak and write in their
areas of expertise.
During this interactive session you will learn
the pitfalls and success stories of several
"expert" speakers concerning: (1) Topic
Development. (2) Platform Mechanics, and (3)
Presenting and Performing. Whether you are just
thinking about it, or you already speak as well
as consult, you will find this session
informative. As a bonus, attendees will be given
access to approximately 50 articles written by
professional speakers and to useful handouts and
checklists developed by Dr. Cassidy.
Dr. Joan Cassidy CMC, President, Integrated
Leadership Concepts, Inc., has often been
referred to as a true "Renaissance Woman." She
is a Certified Management Consultant, executive,
professor, professional speaker, and author. She
attributes her success to the fact that she has
held leadership positions in both the public and
private sectors for over 25 years. Twelve years
ago she founded Integrated Leadership Concepts,
Inc. Since then she has used "whole-brain"
concepts to help Fortune 500 companies and other
organizations improve productivity, quality and
customer satisfaction.
(more on
Dr. Cassidy or ILC).
More details about the program and speakers
can be found on the
IMC NCR website.
Summary of Last Month's Program. In
April, Valerie Graff talked about "Consulting is
More Than Just the Deliverable: Effective
Project Implementation. She explored how clients
hire you to help them do better -- whether
through improved program management, information
technology, accounting systems, or training.
Rather than just do an analysis and leave,
Valerie showed us that, while it's important to
define clear outcomes and give our best
expertise, we (and our clients!) succeed when
our clients actually implement our projects,
which we are in a unique position to influence.

Baltimore Network Group. On April 16,
the IMC NCR-sponsored Baltimore consultant's

the consulting business in the Baltimore/Central
Maryland region. We also have developed an
informal partnership with Business Division of
the Howard County Community College.
We will have our next meeting on Friday, May
21, from 8:00-9:30am, in Room 230 in the ILB
building on the HCCC campus in Columbia,
Maryland. The Baltimore group plans to meet
monthly on the third Friday of the month, to
explore ideas for programs and activities, to
network, and to discuss topics of common
concern. At the May breakfast, a representative
from HCCC will talk about their activities and
their new entrepreneurship program. If you plan

There's plenty of parking in the lot right next
to the ILB building.
2004 IMC NCR Golf Outing. The Chapter is
making plans for our Third Annual Golf Outing in
May of this year. Our plan is to gather on May
22nd, at
Renditions Golf Club in Davidsonville, MD,
and make this a routine annual event - in
preparation for our hosting of the May 2006
North American Conference for Management
Consultants. If any of you have had the pleasure
of playing the course, you'll know that it's a
combination of some of the more famous golf
holes in the world. (You have to see their
"rendition" of Augusta National's "Amen Corner"
or the 17th at Sawgrass, yep, 132 yards over
water to an island green...) If you'd like to be
included in the event, please let our
outstanding Events Executive, Harold McDonald
CMC, know (mcdonajh@aol.com).

International Consulting. Going global
doesn't just have to be for major consulting
firms. Small firms have the same types of
opportunities as large firms - it just requires
a serious focus and a diligent effort to uncover
them. There are several places to start your
search, such as the
International
Trade Center, which is housed in the Ronald
Reagan Building in downtown Washington. It hosts
trade shows and meetings, houses firms with
international practices, and the US Center for
World Trade, which has information on
industries, activities, and organizations
involved in international business. Also,
several IMC NCR members do international work,
including John Strawhorn, Cathy Silverstein, Ray
Suarez, Tim McNamara, and Grant Davies, among
others.
Taking Flight With Your Practice. IMC
USA has completed its professional development
offering targeted at improving your consulting
marketing skills. Taking Flight with Your
Practice: Client Focused Consulting Practices
is an interactive multi-week program where you
work with others to develop a marketing plan for
your business, and benefiting from the wisdom
and perspective of peers taking the program with
you. Part One - Developing the Engagement -
covers strategy, marketing, selling, proposing
and professional conduct and ethics. Part Two
covers delivering and disengaging from the
client.
This correspondence-based workbook provides a
framework for marketing and selling your
consulting services. It has proven popular with
individuals repositioning a consulting practice
and with smaller firms seeking a good training
and orientation program for their consultants.
IMC NCR will provide group and mentoring
sessions around this framework starting later
this year. Measurable one-on-one client
simulations help you refine your client and
selling skills when you choose the mentoring
program while you gain feedback from experts and
peers alike. Those who are interested in this
program should contact
Karen
Buehler, Chair of IMC NCR Continuing
Professional Development.

Member News. John Haecker's article
Delivering Bottom-Line Results >From Training
- Through Coaching was published on HR
Executive Magazine's Web site February 9, 2004.
The article is about how executive education
programs can deliver stronger results by using
coaching to supplement training. John was also
interviewed on this topic in the February 2004
print edition of HR Executive.
Dr. Joan Cassidy recently presented a paper, "Is
Distance Education Right For You?" at the
Maryland Distance Learning Association (MDLA)
Annual Conference. The paper was based on the
results of research she conducted on several of
her on-line education classes for the University
of Maryland University College. A portion of the
paper and her instrument to identify essential
competencies for successful on-line learning was
published in ASTD's 2004 Training and
Performance Sourcebook.

IMC NCR Website |

Are You Findable on the IMC NCR Website
(updated monthly)? You may or may not be
surprised at how much consulting business comes
from web searches, including those through
IMC NCR. See
most searched for terms. We maintain two
lists: (1) search terms visitors used in the
site search engines and (2) based on those
searches, whose consultant directory profiles
visitors clicked through to view. Updates May 3,
2004.
IMC NCR Website Traffic Skyrockets.
Increased site marketing and interest in IMC NCR
by prospective members and businesses has more
then tripled site traffic over the past few
months. We are getting more than 3,000 unique
visitors per month, well over our target of
2,000 for 2004 (and compared to our actual
traffic of an average of 1,000/month for 2003).
Visitors come from 46 countries, increasing
numbers of visitors are coming from search
engines, and more people are looking for
specific consultants or consulting expertise
(chapter member James Dalkin wins this month's
"most popular consultant" prize with 67 specific
searches for his name that brought visitors to
the IMC NCR site).
Example of a Good Website. The site of
a new member, Joan Berkowitz, from
Farkas Berkowitz & Company, is a good
example of simple, clear presentation. The
virtual company provides design, construction,
and operational services for government and
industry and regularly looks ofr experienced
consultants to staff its projects. |

Book Review. Our education doesn't stop
when we leave the client's offices. Reading
books about consultants, the consulting process,
or management and busness in general is critical
to keep our perspective fresh and our skills
sharp. McKinsey's Marvin Bower: Vision,
Leadership and the Creation of Management
Consulting, by Elizabeth Haas Edersheim
(Author) is one such book, reviewed by Michael
E. Cohen CMC.
This is a truly outstanding book. It is
very well- written and thoroughly presents the
principles and experiences that made Marvin
Bower one of the giants of management
consulting. Even with 30 years experience in
management consulting, I learned a great deal
about client relationships and other aspects of
consulting. Marvin Bower was truly a remarkable
leader. For skills and ethics in management
consulting, he rates at the top.
The only negative about the book is that it's
not balanced. No one is perfect- not even Mr.
Bower or McKinsey- as the author might have you
believe. And I don't think Mr. Bower was quite
the non- autocratic and non-hierarchical leader
as the author and others have asserted. Firing a
partner because he was doing work for one client
that didn't deal with "major problems;" firing
an associate and ordering him to leave the firm
and building in 30 minutes for a lapse in
judgment (albeit a significant one); and putting
the fear of God in associates if they were seen
having a social rather than a business lunch or
if they wore argyle socks sounds pretty
autocratic to me. Even if he encouraged dissent
in staff discussions.
Also, I don't agree that Mr. Bower was the
founder of professional management consulting. I
believe Ed Booz of Booz, Allen and Hamilton was.
Of course, as a former Booz Allen partner, I may
be biased. Notwithstanding the above criticisms,
this is one of the best books I've ever read. (4
out of 5 stars.) |
